Much in here to vibe with but particularly the following: "There are not enough steps one can take to ward off our individual genetic destinies. Fate does not care a whit if you did your ab workout as prescribed by the Fitness Gods. Fate knows where you live and will decide how long you live there." Thanks for sharing your reflections, Beth! I have been away from your blog for too long. I am especially grateful that I came back to see this one in particular. Maybe it is because when I go hiking lately, I become conscious of the internal dynamics of my knees.
Behind your narrative here, and indeed behind much of your writing, is this notion of facing aging on your terms. Its not the overly worn notion of aging gracefully, which implies retreat and slowly stepping out of view. Nor are you fighting or pretending that it is not happening. Instead, you meet the challenges that time gives you with self-awareness and practical thinking.
I found this especially inspiring because of something that happened years ago when I was hiking in the mountains east of Tucson. I saw an old man with a gnarled walking stick and it was not clear to me if he was struggling or not. He had stopped, either to take the view, take a breath or maybe both. I stopped for a moment and gave him a polite greeting. He said "This mountain saved my life. The doctor told me four years ago that I only had six months to live. Keep coming back and it will work for you too."
Thank you for sharing. You gave me some great ideas about exercising. Thank you! Right now I am in my second year of menopause - I started HRT last year. Michelle Obama reminded us of the importance of moving our body. I know that if I sit too long, my muscles start to ache so I get up often. I walk. I stretch. I take Bar Method exercise classes online. Strength training is important to keep my bones strong. Dick Van Dyke is still going strong at 99? 100? years old and he dances every day.

Beth, I feel the same way about walking everyday! I want to keep moving as much and as long as I am able!!!
Yes you and I are kindred spirits in that regard as I suspect in many others.

Thank you, as usual, for all that you share.
Smart to use what Mother Nature gives us before Father Time takes it away.

Yes he is a great example for us all. We have to move. " Use it or lose it!"
